Desk Setup 101: Simple Ergonomics Fixes for a Sore Neck

desk setup 101

You don't need a full office overhaul to take real pressure off your neck. A handful of small, specific adjustments tend to matter far more than an expensive chair or a brand new desk. Here's where to actually focus.

1. Monitor Height

The single biggest lever most people can pull. The top third of your screen should sit roughly at eye level, so your neck stays close to neutral instead of tilting down. If you're on a laptop without an external monitor, a stand or even a stack of sturdy books gets you most of the way there, paired with an external keyboard so your hands don't end up too high.

2. Chair and Seat Height

Your hips should sit slightly above your knees, with your feet flat on the floor. If your chair doesn't adjust, a small footrest, or another stack of books, can fix the geometry without a new purchase.

3. Keyboard and Mouse Distance

Reaching too far forward for your keyboard pulls your shoulders and head forward with it. Keep both close enough that your elbows stay near your sides at roughly a right angle.

4. Document and Phone Placement

If you regularly reference papers or a phone while working, a document holder or simple stand next to your monitor keeps you from repeatedly tipping your head down and to the side.

5. A Reason to Move

Even a perfect setup causes tension if you sit in it for eight hours straight without a break. A simple recurring reminder, every 45 to 60 minutes, to stand, stretch, or just look away from the screen does more for neck tension than most equipment upgrades.

Start With One

You don't need to fix all five at once. Monitor height alone, adjusted correctly, is often enough to notice a real difference within a week or two. Add the rest as you go.
